Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is often calledcardiac rehab. It is a complete therapy that combines the prescribed exercise training, education on heart health, cardiac risk factor modification, diet and nutrition counselling, and psychosocial support. It is a supervised program. Cardiac rehab will help you recover, get stronger, and be confident after you’ve had a medical procedure such as heart surgery for a heart issue like a heart attack.

A personalised cardiac rehabilitation program typically takes three months. Healthcare providers such as clinical exercise physiologists, doctors, nurses, counsellors, and dieticians provide you with their expertise and guidance throughout the program. Whatever your age or gender, and whether you have a minor or major issue

There are 3 phases of cardiac rehab, which begin before you get discharged from the hospital and are to be continued long-term.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Phase 1:  In-patient.  It starts during your hospital stay.

Phase 2:  Out-patient. After you leave the hospital, you will do cardiac rehab at an outpatient facility.

Phase 3:  On your own, and you do the exercises on your own and at your own expense.

Cardiac rehabilitation will benefit individuals who have had issues with their heart, such as:

  • Coronary Artery Angioplasty with or without stent placement
  • Coronary artery by-pass graft
  • Heart Valve Repair/replacement
  • Heart or Heart/Lung transplant
  • Angina
  • Use of ventricular assist devices
  • Heart failure
  • Heart attack

If you’ve had a heart attack or heart problems; you get help recovering through cardiac rehab. An individualised plan will be outlined to improve your physical health, including; identifying and managing risk factors. It can be scary to have a heart attack; it can also make you feel depressed. Cardiac rehabilitation focuses on the importance of quality of life and psychological health.

During the cardiac rehab program, it is very likely that you will be working with a healthcare professional team. The team may include nurses, cardiologists, educators, exercise specialists, nutrition specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and mental health specialists.

Doing some breathing control exercises regularly can help you manage your symptoms. These are recommended to patients who’ve just had cardiac surgery. There are varying instructions on how long a patient can continue exercises after getting discharged from the hospital. Participating and completing the cardiac rehabilitation program will reduce the risk of death over 1 to 3 years and prevent a second heart attack in the future.

  • Cardiac rehab offers many health benefits, both short and long-term.
  • Strengthen your heart and body after a heart attack
  • Relieve chest pains and other symptoms of heart problems
  • You can create healthier habits

Cardiac rehab will help you return to your active lifestyle, remain more motivated, and have more energy to accomplish all the tasks you love and enjoy. You will be able to rebuild your life, emotionally and physically, because you will learn how to manage your condition.
