Diseases and Conditions of Pediatric Patients

Pediatric diseases are the most common conditions in children. Parents are aware of the difficulties in dealing with a sick child. Many of these diseases may cause discomfort, both to the parent and child, but they are not usually serious. It is vital that, as a parent, you know the basics of the most common illnesses your kid may get.

Below is a pediatric diseases list that is common among children and some basic information about each:

*  Gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu, is caused by a quickly spreading virus. The symptoms of gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Usually, within a couple of days, the symptoms pass. Gastroenteritis treatment includes rest and fluids to prevent dehydration from diarrhoea and vomiting.

The first line of pediatric diarrhea treatment is giving the child an oral rehydration solution (ORS) like Pedialite. This will prevent dehydration of the child.

*  Conjunctivitis is the “pink eye” by its descriptive name and shows symptoms of redness, discharge, itchiness, and swelling in one or both eyes. Conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria or virus that gets into the eyes. Treatments for pink eye include eye drops and antibiotics.

 *  Bronchitis is when the airways in the lungs produce mucus and swell. The symptoms are coughing, soreness in the chest, headache, body aches, fatigue, and sore throat. Bronchitis is caused by a virus that occurs after an upper respiratory infection.

*  Influenza or flu is caused by a virus that can easily spread, especially when infected people cough and sneeze. This common pediatric disease shows symptoms of sore throat, fever, fatigue, chills and body aches. To reduce the risk of you and your children getting the flu, and ensure everyonereceives the flu vaccine every year.

*  Ear infections are more common among children than adults and are caused by bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms of this disease are fever, ear pain, irritability, tugging at an ear, or difficulty sleeping.

*  Common Colds are one of the most common pediatric diseases caused by viruses that spread easily in a crowded environment, where people, young and old alike, have close contact. The symptoms are headache, fever and muscle aches. Common colds have no cure but can be treated with over-the-counter medications.

Other pediatric illnesses include anaemia, chicken pox, asthma, diphtheria, leukaemia, measles, Tuberculosis, Polio, Whopping cough, Lyme disease, Down Syndrome, cancer, and others. Many common childhood diseases run their course, which means they begin, continues for a time, and then end, or they naturally clear up with rest and medications. However, some symptoms of these childhood illnesses are signs that you should contact the doctor or paediatrician of your child. You must seek medical advice for your child.
